Core Idea
In a world marked by growing complexity and deepening polarization, we often find ourselves navigating opposing perspectives, unresolved and hidden tensions, which lead to escalating conflicts. To unlock the highest potential of organizations, teams, communities, and networks, we need to engage with the heart of the matter: the emotions, power dynamics, and unspoken concerns that directly impact collaboration, decision-making, long-term resilience and innovation.

Lewis Deep Democracy is a cutting edge facilitation, participative leadership, decision making, and conflict transformation methodology that is pragmatic, easily acquired and can be applied into a wide range of situations. The tools and methods of Lewis Deep Democracy enable every voice to be heard, valued, and taken into consideration, including the minority voice. It goes far beyond the conventional methods of participatory processes that enable the exchange of ideas, and instead surfaces emotions, values, and beliefs to inform and enrich the group’s process. Lewis Deep Democracy provides frameworks and perspectives to manage diversity and complexity.

Work through tensions to find common ground
Harness diversity and wisdom of the group
Program Overview
The 3-day course provides knowledge and practical tools in the following areas:
UNDERSTANDING GROUP DYNAMICS
  • Read the dynamics of a group, pick up on the early signs of resistance and emerging conflict, and act in a timely manner to reduce tension.
  • Understand the obstacles to good communication and build the foundations for shared understanding.
  • Observe group dynamics that exist beyond individuals, and manage them for more effective teamwork.
  • Begin and end meetings with a powerful way to connect the group, and get a handle on what is happening in the room.
COLLABORATIVE DECISION MAKING
  • Facilitate dynamic conversations which unleash engagement, creativity, and excitement.
  • Harness the power of collective intelligence by enabling the most quiet participants to find their voice and express their views.
  • Create safety in large or small groups for difficult conversations to take place.
  • Search for the wisdom of the minority and improve decision making by incorporating this valuable information.
RESOLVING CONFLICT AND TENSION
  • Recognize the underlying tensions that block a group progress, diagnose when group dynamics become polarised and rigid, and know what facilitation tools to use in such situations.
  • Resolve differences of opinions, arguments and conflicts instead of allowing anger and blaming to continue.
  • Learn to unleash the creative potential that lies within every conflict.
  • Use tension as an opportunity for learning and as a way to improve relationships.

What Participants Say
Daniel Ford
Co-Director at Huddlecraft
“Deep Democracy has changed the way I look at the world, at difference and at group dynamics. My work revolves around bringing people together around complex sustainability challenges, and designing processes to find ways of approaching these challenges that value multiple perspectives on the problem. DD has equipped me with practical tools to learn from the wisdom of the minority voice, and move forward with decisions that work for everyone, whilst reducing the risks of resistance and blockers to change over time. I’ve had the chance to apply the DD process at work, with friends and with my partner, and it’s resulted in stronger relationships in all three spheres!”
Catherine Scott
Head of Governance and Innovation at The Social Change Nest
“Deep Democracy has personally helped me reflect on how I communicate, facilitate, and create safe spaces for all voices and opinions to be heard, allowing collective decisions to be made. It's been so useful to use these skills when facilitating conversations, using aspects of Deep Democracy to allow often unheard voices or opinions to be spoken, and helping people to stay engaged when they may feel a decision isn't going their way. I would highly recommend the training to anyone who come up against situations where things that are unspoken are having an impact, who want to support others to make democratic decisions where there may be conflicting opinions or thoughts between participants, and those who are trying to work in a more collaborative way.”
Lisa Clarke
Governance, Leadership, System Change & Coaching
“My experience of using Deep Democracy has been that it works best when relationships with and or across groups have already started to be built and to use it as a way to get greater trust and insight. The training can bring our own relationship with conflict to the surface which can be uncomfortable at times and Payam’s sensitive explicit approach to addressing this in the training and all the coordination around setting up programmes is spot on. On a personal level Payam has a kind, no-nonsense approach to individual and group interactions, supporting emotional growth along with a wider acknowledgement of the systems in which people sit and interact.”
