Core Idea
In a fast-changing, interconnected and increasingly polarised world, developing effective strategies to tackle complex societal challenges requires more than just setting goals and creating plans — it demands an ongoing process of learning, adaptation and collaboration.

Practitioners involved in catalysing and accompanying transformation processes must embrace ambiguity and fluidity of change and adapt their approaches based on shifting contexts, insights, and relationships.
The Systems Change Lab is a deep dive into the concepts, principles and practices of strategy development and implementation in complex and dynamic environments.
Since there is no single way to approach systems change, the lab will draw on diverse methods and frameworks from across the wide field of systems change, tailored to the needs of the group.
What You Get
Participants of The Systems Change Lab will:
  • get acquainted with and discuss different theories of how change happens
  • apply living system perspective and systems thinking to strategy development
  • reflect on leadership practices to catalyse and accompany transformation processes
  • explore how to navigate between emergent solutions and intentional outcomes
  • learn how to hold space and navigate relational dynamics in complex group settings
  • try out in practice and apply learning to their real-life challenges
The lab is designed for systems change practitioners, policymakers, change managers, facilitators and consultants involved in designing, launching, leading and implementing complex social change initiatives in multi-stakeholder settings.
The Curriculum
The 2-day workshop is structured around three key building blocks:
  • Understanding complex systems
    • Embracing complexity worldview
    • Exploring different theories of how change happens
    • Reflecting on systems change as an outcome, process and practice
    • Applying frameworks and tools for systemic diagnosis to real-life challenges
  • Strategy design in complexity
    • Applying living systems perspectives and systems thinking to strategy development
    • Experimentation as a core practice: designing and running strategic experiments
    • Navigating the tension between emergent solutions and intentional outcomes
    • Developing adaptive strategies that evolve with shifting contexts
  • Leadership & facilitation for transformation
    • Explore leadership practices to catalyse and accompany transformation processes in multistakeholder settings
    • Learn how to hold space and navigate relational dynamics in complex group settings
    • Reflect on collaboration as a core capability for innovation and transformative change

Chief Enabling Officer • School of System Change
Anna Birney is Chief Enabling Officer at the School of System Change. Anna is passionate about designing and facilitating systems change programmes that support people, communities, and organisations to transform their practice which seeded the set up the School of System Change in 2016, where she designs the curriculum, supports and works with the facilitators, and continues to weave learning together about the field of systems change.

Anna started facilitating multi-stakeholder processes in 2002, working at WWF-UK a six-year education programme on system change. She has worked with a wide range of organisations and initiatives on systems change from to Unilever and Nike, Bosch Foundation, to Scottish Climate Assembly, as well as being a collaborative director on Marine CoLab and #Oneless, developing their systems change learning and practice. At the core of her work are action inquiries in how we organise, the power and relationships to paradigm shifting questions about love and the meaning of life.
